Modern Day Knights: Jessica's Kingwood Baby Shower Weekend

So I begin at the beginning of September. Yikes- I am more than a little behind. September was a crazy busy month. I feel like I was gone the whole month! So I?ll start at the beginning. The first weekend of September was Jessica (my sister) baby shower in Kingwood.

????????? My mom?s cousin, Verna was coming into town for the shower and so I went to Kingwood a few days early so Ascher and I could hang out and see Verna before the craziness of the weekend began. Also, my cousin, Vanessa and her baby, Ty (who is less than 24 hours older than Ascher) came on Thursday as well. It was the first time for the babies to meet.

? ? ? ? ? ?Friday we got up and headed to Target. Mom got Ascher a little walker to keep at her house. I had so much fun looking at all the toys and thinking about Christmas! I can?t wait! After Target we came back to the house and let the babies play. Friday night everyone (Parkers & Calhouns) came over for dinner. It was nice to have everyone together. Granted we were missing a few- Jessica & Roy weren?t there yet. The rest of the Calhouns were at home and Elissa was in Alaska. We missed them but still had fun being together. We haven?t all been together in awhile.

???Jessica & Roy got there after everyone had left. We chatted for a little while before everyone went to bed. Saturday morning we got up and got ready for the shower. It feels like just yesterday it was my baby shower- now Ascher is almost 6 months old and Hadley is about to be here!! EEEEK! Time is going by too fast! We went over to Ms. Buckstaff?s house and the shower began. It was so pretty and you really could tell how much love these people have for Jessica & Hadley.

I can?t wait for Hadley to get here!!?

According to the image (which you can catch after the break), the Isis app will arrive on Google Play come October 22nd for folks in Salt Lake City, Utah and Austin, Texas to take for a test drive. Another image reveals that those who activate their mobile wallet could snag $10, and an additional $15 if they convert their Isis Cash card into a reloadable prepaid card. Call one of the two cities home and can't wait to put the NFC payment solution through its paces? You'll need an Isis SIM card and a Samsung Galaxy S III, S II or Relay 4G to partake in the festivities. For those outside the lucky cities, there's still no word on when Isis will fully launch.

Russia asks Afghanistan for help with Soviet MIAs

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Russia appealed Monday to the Afghan authorities and public to provide information on over 200 Soviet troops listed as missing since Soviet forces ended their occupation of Afghanistan in 1989 ? including 30 to 40 who may still be alive.

Russian ambassador Andrey Avetisyan said the two countries are preparing an agreement that would regulate future efforts to recover the servicemen, who went missing during a decade of guerrilla warfare in the impoverished nation.

Difficulties remain, he noted, in accessing some areas believed to contain soldiers' graves because of the current war between international forces, the Taliban and other insurgents.

"We are talking about places where nobody goes, remote points where fighting is still heavy," he told reporters.

The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan on Dec. 27, 1979, telling the world it aimed to transform Afghanistan into a modern socialist state. Moscow sought to prop up a communist regime facing a popular uprising, but left largely defeated on Feb. 15, 1989 by anti-communist mujahedeen forces receiving massive support from the United States, China, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and others.

The Soviets maintained a garrison of about 80,000 troops in Afghanistan through much of that war. Nearly 700,000 rotated through the country and about 15,000 died in the 10-year conflict.

A Russian veterans group says 265 soldiers remain unaccounted for. About 20 are thought to have resettled in other countries after they deserted, while 30 to 40 may still be in Afghanistan or Pakistan.

One of those was Nikolai Bystrov, an army lieutenant captured by guerrillas fighting the Soviet occupation. He later became the personal bodyguard of Northern Alliance leader Ahmed Shah Massoud who battled the Taliban during the 1990s.

Aleksander Lavrentyev, deputy head of a veterans group searching for Soviet MIAs, said his group had received excellent help from Afghan authorities, the Red Crescent, NGOs and ordinary citizens ? including those who had fought on the opposing side ? in locating the remains of 15 soldiers in the past 4 years. Of those, five were positively identified while the rest were still undergoing forensic testing.

"But now time is passing and it is becoming more and more difficult to find witnesses of those events," he said.

The move to resolve the remaining MIA cases comes as the U.S.-led NATO coalition is preparing to draw down its forces in Afghanistan and hand over responsibility for the war in 2014 to the Afghan security forces.

Despite the presence of up to 140,000 foreign troops, NATO has not been able to defeat the guerrillas who have successfully regrouped after their crushing defeat by U.S.-led forces in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks.

Russia has backed the international coalition in the war, providing air and land transit routes for troops and equipment. But Moscow has been critical of the alliance's plans to pull out while the Taliban remain undefeated.

MacNN | iPhone News: Lightning add-ons in limbo as Apple tightens rules

Only Apple-approved factories can produce Lightning goods

Apple has significantly changed its Made For iPad/iPhone/iPod (MFi) policies, changes that are keeping potential iDevice accessory makers from producing Lightning accessories. Sources tell iLounge that the number of Lightning accessories available in the near future will be lower than previously expected due to the special construction of Apple's adapter as well as the new MFi policies. Apple is reportedly planning a seminar in the near future, where it will discuss the policy changes and new rules for manufacturers, after which designers may begin manufacturing Lightning devices in greater quantities.

At the center of the manufacturers' difficulties is the special authentication chip Apple has built into the Lightning adapter. Unauthorized third parties looking to duplicate Lightning connectors have attested that they are difficult to copy due to the authenticator. One manufacturer began offering an iTronz Lightning Adapter on Amazon in September shortly after the iPhone 5's announcement, but preorders for that device have since been cancelled. Amazon cited the Lightning connector's authentication chip in its letter canceling sales.

Apple is said to be planning an MFi seminar, where it will meet with manufacturers and lay out the new rules for iDevice accessories. Reportedly, Apple will be determining a list of Apple-approved manufacturing facilities, and only those facilities will be able to produce Lightning connector accessories, including third-party accessories.

Currently, no factories have been approved by Apple, meaning it is likely that no one outside of Apple is producing Lightning accessories. Following the MFi seminar, though, sources believe that third-party Lightning accessories will be manufactured in time for the holiday shopping season.

Speech by SLW at CENTRAL Rat Race 2012 opening ceremony

??Speech by SLW at CENTRAL Rat Race 2012 opening ceremony

Hong Kong (HKSAR) - Following is the speech by the Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, at the opening ceremony of CENTRAL RAT Race 2012 today (October 14):

Mr Keswick (Mr Ben Keswick, Chairman of MINDSET), Mr Pang (Mr Y K Pang, Chief Executive of Hongkong Land), Mr Chow (Mr Raymond Chow, Executive Director of Hongkong Land), Mr Yip (Mr Yip Wing-shing, Chairman of Central and Western District Council), Mr Chan (Mr Chan Hok-fung, Vice Chairman of Central and Western District Council), distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,

It gives me great pleasure to take part inthis CENTRAL Rat Race 2012 organised by the Hongkong Land. I am honoured indeed to meet, and address, such a distinguished audience comprising corporate executives from multi-national and local business firms, members from the rehabilitation sector and our younger generation.

To live in a fast-paced city like Hong Kong, keeping mental health is just as important as maintaining physical fitness.

Over the years, this meaningful event has become one of Hong Kong's signature charity initiatives and helped raise over HK$12.6 million for MINDSET to support mental health-related organisations and projects in Hong Kong and on the Mainland since 2006. May I take this opportunity to thank all the Jardine Ambassadors of MINDSET for your enthusiasm and efforts in raising public awareness of mental health issues, as well as supporting persons recovering from mental illness to integrate into society in collaboration with rehabilitation non-governmental organisations and academic bodies.

The Government is keenly aware of the needs of persons with mental health problems and their families/carers, and keeps under regular review the provision of community mental health services in response to changing demand. As you may be aware, the Integrated Community Centres for Mental Wellness (ICCMWs) have commenced service in 18 districts across the territory since October 2010.These centres provide one-stop and accessible mental health support services ranging from prevention to crisis management for discharged mental patients, persons with suspected mental health problems, their families/carers and residents living in the community.

By the end of June 2012, some 22 000 discharged mental patients and persons with suspected mental health problems received services from the 24 centres across all 18 districts.During the period, around 4 000 public education and publicity programmes were organised, benefitting more than 227 000 people. This favourable output reflected that the services have been widely supported and recognised by the public and service users.

Over the past few years, the Government has been injecting additional resources to the Hospital Authority (HA) and Social Welfare Department (SWD) to enhance the provision of mental health services. Indeed, the total expenditure of mental health services has increased from $3.39 billion in 2007-08 to $4.52 billion in 2011-12, representing an increase of 30 per cent. This year, the Hospital Authority has extended its Case Management Programme for the severe mentally ill patients to a total of 12 districts.Additional resources have also been provided to the ICCMWs to strengthen their manpower and supervisory support so as to serve more persons in need. Moreover, SWD has since 2005-06 increased the number of psychiatric medical social workers by 46 per cent to tie in with HA¡¦s various initiatives on mental health services and to assist the mentally ill persons and their families/carers to overcome the difficulties and stresses arising from mental illness.

Given the increasing demand for community mental health support services, the Government will continue to enhance the service quality and provide additional resources to meet growing service demand. In tandem, the Government will reinforce collaboration with various sectors, including the business sector, the rehabilitation sector and the local communities in promoting mental health.Last Sunday, at a kick-off event of the annual Mental Health Month, I joined over 1 500 participants from the business sector, education sector, rehabilitation sector and district councils for a Mental Health Walk from Victoria Park to Wan Chai to raise public awareness of mental wellness.Mindset is one of the supporting organisations of the event.

This week, I am most delighted to join the Rat Race - another landmark event in promoting mental health.

I am sure that with the concerted efforts of the community, we are able to make Hong Kong a truly caring and healthy city.

In closing, may I thank Hongkong Land once again for organising this very innovative and meaningful charity event, and also MINDSET for your sterling contribution to arouse public awareness on the importance of mental health.I wish the CENTRAL Rat Race 2012 every success and everyone here a memorable and fruitful experience! Thank you.

GOP hopes soar as Romney rolls in Ohio

LEBANON, Ohio -- Just two weeks ago, Republicans here in Ohio, even in GOP stronghold Warren County, were filled with anxiety and doubt.? Poll after poll showed President Obama widening his lead over Mitt Romney in this crucial battleground state.? Republicans didn't know whether to believe the polls -- many didn't -- or admit their man was faltering in a nearly must-win state.? Either way, it was a frustrating situation.

?No longer.? In the wake of Romney's decisive victory over Obama in the first presidential debate October 3, the campaign's trajectory here in Ohio is up, up, up.? Not just in the polls, where Romney has cut a five-and-a-half point Obama lead in the RealClearPolitics average of polls to 1.7 points, but also in Republicans' everyday lives as they talk to friends and, in some cases, volunteer for the campaign. And on Saturday evening in Lebanon, population 20,242, county seat of Warren County, where John McCain beat Barack Obama 67 percent to 31 percent in 2008, optimism had returned.

?"There is hope, we have hope now," said Tracey Perry of Loveland as she waited for Romney to speak to a crowd of nearly 10,000.? "We were afraid the message was never going to get out."

?"We were depressed," said Cinda Hacker, of Centerville.? "The debate turned it around."

?"We weren't depressed," countered Brooks Compton, also of Centerville, who volunteers for the Romney campaign. "We were obviously nervous."? After a moment, Compton added, "We're going to win Ohio."

?Of course Romney says that, too.? But now he sounds like he believes it.? Unlike in months past, Romney's stump critique of Obama has bite.? With time running out before Election Day, his bill of particulars against Obama is sharper, more focused, and ends in a punch line.? "Instead of the people on food stamps, instead of the fact that half the kids coming out of college can't find college-level work, instead of the fact that one out of six Americans is living in poverty, what he wants to talk about is how he can save Big Bird," Romney told the crowd in Lebanon.? "What I want to talk about is how I can save the American family and get good jobs for the American people."

"His campaign is getting smaller and smaller," Romney said of Obama, accusing the president of focusing on smaller issues at the expense of big problems like jobs and the economy. "And our crowds keep getting bigger and bigger.? There's a crescendo of passion about changing Washington."

Romney aides say they see a clear change in Ohio since before the debate.? "Dead even," said one adviser of the campaign's internal polls.? Whatever the numbers, the crowds are definitely bigger.? And not just here in Lebanon, where people filled a long stretch of South Broadway Street.? Earlier in the week, Romney drew an estimated 12,000 in Cuyahoga Falls and 9,000 in Sidney.? Things are getting better.

"I see Romney momentum in Ohio in several ways," said Mark Weaver, a longtime Republican strategist in Ohio.? "People clamoring to get tickets to see him speak, people standing in line to get yard signs and then being upset if they run out, and polling that I see in my other races show him outperforming most other Republican candidates here."? And more: in an email interview, Weaver also said he sees "more and higher quality grassroots contacts, a better absentee ballot 'chase' program, staffers and volunteers who are mostly from the state (as ?opposed to a much higher rate of imports for Obama)."

It's almost all attributable to Romney's debate victory.? "I watched a couple of the Sunday shows and heard a lot of the experts say debates don't matter, and then I was on the ground in Ohio and people were going nuts," said Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, who has famously helped prepare Romney for the debates and has traveled with him throughout the state.? Portman was of course delighted by Romney's win, but equally aware that a Romney loss could have been devastating for a campaign that many observers said was on the ropes in early October.? "It's not only that [the debate] really helped us," Portman said, "it's that it would have been far more difficult had it gone the other way."

Danielle Low, a 22 year-old preschool teacher in Lebanon, is the quintessential Romney target voter.? In 2008, she was newly eligible to vote, and she chose Barack Obama. "But then I gave birth to my first son, and I knew we needed a change," Low said. "We bought a house in '09 and we're struggling every day, my husband and I are.? I just want to see things turn around.? I want to be able to afford to have another child.? I want to be able to afford to buy a house where we want to live, and right now, with the economy the way it is, we can't do that."

"I think President Obama tricked me into voting for him," Low continued in an impromptu discussion that could have doubled as a Romney ad.? "I feel like he lied to me.? He made promises he couldn't keep.? He played on my young emotions.? He played on me because I was young and na?ve.? I didn't know anything about the world.? I believed that he was going to give us a change.? I just feel like he made a lot of promises -- there's no way he followed through with them.? I haven't seen any change.? I've seen change for the worse, not change for the better.? So I hope Mitt Romney can carry us through the next four years."

A woman standing nearby, Helga Clark, of Fairborn, whispered, "I hope she's one of millions who've changed their minds."? Whether those voters are out there in truly big numbers will determine who wins Ohio, and possibly the presidency.

Even this late in the campaign, Romney's stump speech, which he has given thousands of times, can still take odd turns.? For example, in Lebanon, with an obviously fired-up crowd, he told three morbid stories in a row, subduing the audience when he should have been revving it up.

First, Romney told of running into an old classmate from Harvard at a rally a few weeks ago.? The man had been left a quadriplegic after a terrible auto accident, Romney said, but had not given into despondency and had remained involved in his business and in spinal cord research.? Romney had not seen the man in a long time, and Romney recounted putting his hand on the man's shoulder and saying, "God bless you, Billy; I love you."

"The next day," Romney told the crowd, "I heard he passed away."

"Oooohhhhhh," went the crowd, audibly surprised by the story's sad ending.

Romney immediately launched into the story of a woman he met at the Republican convention who earlier had been packing a box of birthday presents for her husband, a U.S. sharpshooter in Afghanistan, when she learned he had been killed.

Another "Oooohhhhhh" came from the audience, saddened again.

And then, straightaway, Romney began a story he has told many times, about a Boy Scout troop that was very proud of its flag, which had flown over the U.S. Capitol.? The scouts' dream was to have the flag fly on the space shuttle.? After much work, the dream was realized.? Then Romney told the crowd the shuttle flight that carried the flag was the Challenger, which exploded in 1986, killing all aboard.

"Oooohhhhhh," went the crowd yet again.

Romney said the flag was later recovered, in nearly pristine condition, from the Challenger wreckage.? He had an opportunity to see the flag, Romney said, and when he touched it, he felt something akin to electricity race up his arm. From there, Romney declared that he loves this country very much.? A short time later, he recited a few lines of "America the Beautiful."

One could feel the puzzlement of the crowd grow with each sad tale, its spirits sinking.? This was a political rally.? Why wasn't Romney talking about how bad Barack Obama is and how the only way things will get better is if Mitt Romney is elected president?? That's what people came to hear.

A few minutes, the morose interlude over, Romney had the crowd with him once more, returning to his message of how to "get this economy going again, roaring again."?

For now, the most important development in the presidential campaign is that Romney has managed to get his own campaign going again -- if not roaring, then certainly moving forward with an energy and focus it didn't have before.? That is absolutely critical, because after weeks of hearing bad news on the campaign, Republicans in Ohio want to be up, want to be optimistic, want to believe the Romney campaign is on the rise and determined to win.

"I feel like the media seemed to be giving Obama the edge to the point where people were starting to feel a little bit deflated," said Gary Allen, of Lebanon.? "That has a psychological effect on the voting public when you think you're going to lose.? After the debate, that wasn't true any more.? I think a lot of people changed their minds after that first debate."
