The Position Statement on Asbestos from the Joint Policy Committee of the Societies of Epidemiology (JPC-SE), a renowned and respected group of epidemiologists, calls for the immediate end to all use, mining and exporting of asbestos. In short, they all concur: Asbestos kills. Exposure to asbestos causes mesothelioma, a cancer that is taking hundreds of thousands of innocent workers and people?s lives every year because of its continued use.
The first line of the Executive Summary of this report states:
A rigorous review of the epidemiologic evidence confirms that all types of asbestos fibers are causally implicated in the development of various diseases and premature death. Numerous well respected international and national scientific organization?have concluded that all forms of asbestos are capable of inducing mesothelioma, lung cancer, asbestosis and other diseases.
The summary continues to call specifically on ceasing all use, mining, and exporting of asbestos to low-to-middle income countries, particularly China and throughout Asia, where the dangers are much less publicized and safety regulations weak if any at all.
While this is only a Position Statement, it is made by those with no political or economic interest on either side, only a desire to protect innocent people from dying from well-known and avoidable causes.
